5 Traits of People Having Moral Courage — The Highest Expression of Humanity
“Knowing what’s right doesn’t mean much unless you do what’s right.”
― Theodore Roosevelt
When I was a kid, my mother said to me, “This world is in need of a lot of love, kindness and above all, the courage to act. Even though everyone is capable of doing that, not many choose to do so. So, whenever you have the chance, be the few.”
I have grown up to realise that mankind needs saving and moral courage is the saviour. It is the expression of humanity that everyone needs to exhibit in order to survive.
So, here are 5 traits of people who have moral courage:
1. For them, Empathy is the Simplest Form of Expression of Humanity
Even though, it is the simplest expression of humanity, many people lack empathy. We have become unsympathetic to our fellow humans. And that’s where the root of the problem lies.
Without feeling pain while looking at others’ tear and happiness in others’ laughter, we can never feel the need to exhibit moral courage.
This expression of humanity needs the person to feel others’ pain in order to act to end it.
2. They have Clear Definitions of Right and Wrong
Sometimes, there is a very fine line between right and wrong. Moral courage is not just about doing what you believe to be right, but also about knowing what is right.
Thus, this expression of humanity requires a lot more than just vigour. It requires the ability to identify the fine line between right and wrong and act accordingly.
3. They always Go Out of their Way to Help Others
A person having moral courage is the one who will never cease to help others. He might get into trouble himself, but he will not refrain from helping again.
This expression of humanity makes him do things for others, keep others before himself and as a result, makes this world a better place.
4. They Keep Believing in the Good in People
Not everyday the universe pays kindness with kindness. Even though, it might hurt sometimes, a person having moral courage never stops believing in the good in people.
This expression of humanity gives him the necessary nerve to do that.
5. They have Faced Hardships to Develop Moral Courage
This expression of humanity is not something that a person possess from birth. It develops over time by facing and conquering hardships.
People exhibiting this expression of humanity are the ones who have suffered in one form or the other and thus, know the cost of life and happiness. They know the importance of not only choosing the right, but also working on that.
Conclusion
“Physical courage, which despises all danger, will make a man brave in one way; and moral courage, which despises all opinion, will make a man brave in another.”
― Charles Caleb Colton
Talking big is the easiest thing to do. Actions have a cost. A person having moral courage is aware of that cost and is ready to pay it. He stands tall in front of everything that comes his way for what he believes in.
Isn’t that what we all need to do?
This world is beautiful because of such people and it can be made a better place if we all exhibit this expression of humanity.
